The Missouri State Penitentiary, operating from 1836 to 2004, was the oldest continually running prison west of the Mississippi. Infamous for its harsh conditions, Time magazine once dubbed it "the bloodiest 47 acres in America." It housed notable inmates like boxer Sonny Liston, gangster "Pretty Boy" Floyd, and James Earl Ray, assassin of Martin Luther King Jr., who also escaped from there.
